Joint Ventures

Solicitors and financial advisers who have established a close working relationship often want to formalise this through a corporate association. The most popular form of association is a joint venture – i.e. a separate legal entity which is jointly owned by a law firm and an IFA firm but provides only financial services. SIFA has commissioned DWF LLP to create a comprehensive JV documentation kit (click here for details).

Alternative Business Structures

Potentially greater business synergy can be achieved by the integration of legal and financial services within a single entity. This requires authorisation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority as an Alternative Business Structure (‘ABS’). Establishing an ABS is a more complicated and expensive exercise than setting up a JV, but copious information is available from the SRA on the web site www.sra.org.uk

Combining legal and financial services - the structural options

SIFA has produced an information leaflet which is available to solicitors free of charge on application to sifa@sifa.co.uk
